History
of Harken Towing Co. Ltd.
The company was founded
in 1948 by it's current owner, Ken Mackenzie and
partner Harvey Forrest - hence the name "Harken"
They launched their first tug on August 18th, 1948 and
began a business of servicing sawmills on the Fraser and
Pitt Rivers. Ken bought out Harvey in 1949 and has built
the company into a fleet of 10 tugs, 6 water taxis and
several small barges.
Ken and Dorothy Mackenzie purchased the property at 1990
Argue St., Port Coquitlam and built a home on it to
serve as their home and office. Since then an office,
support buildings and facilities have been added to
enable the growth of the company.
Three generations of the family reside on the property
in their respective homes.
The company's focus has been on towing and yarding log
booms to sawmills as well as towing and storing log
booms in "fresh water" in the Fraser and Pitt
Rivers. Three Point Grey Flats alleys have been recently
added to the services offered.
The third generation of Mackenzies are involved in the
operation and are committed to keeping up with our
changing world to ensure the future of the company.
